Why English Grammar Matters for Young Learners

Many parents remember grammar as a dull list of rules learned by rote — nouns, verbs, adjectives, tenses. But modern grammar teaching is very different. Today, grammar is taught in context, using real sentences and stories, so children understand why a rule exists rather than just memorising it.

Children who understand grammar read more fluently and with better comprehension. When a child knows what a connective is (e.g., 'because', 'however', 'although'), they can follow complex ideas in text. Without a grammar foundation, children can decode words perfectly but still struggle to understand what they have read.

Grammar is the difference between writing that communicates clearly and writing that confuses the reader. Children who understand tense write consistent stories. Those who understand punctuation write sentences that are easy to read. These skills are directly assessed in school examinations from Class 3 onwards.

Jolly Grammar introduces grammar concepts through colour-coded word cards, songs, and activities — not dry textbook exercises. Children learn each grammar concept by using it in their own writing, which is far more effective than filling in blanks on a worksheet.

Formal grammar teaching typically begins around age 6–7, once a child can read simple sentences. At Minal's Classes, we introduce grammar concepts from age 5 in a playful, informal way, and begin structured grammar work from age 6–7. Early exposure builds the instinctive sense of language that makes all future learning easier.
